It's been a while...

It's been quite a while since we've had any activity on this site! I thought that I would try posting something, and see if maybe we can jumpstart Women in the 'Hood again. I've been reading a book that I received from my mother-in-law called "Hugs and Heartaches-Celebrating the Mysteries of Motherhood" by Caroline Ferdinandsen. I won't speak for the whole book yet since I haven't finished it, but the parts that I have read are excellent. She seems to know exactly what I'm thinking and feeling. Probably because she's a mom too...

One of the points that impressed me so much was actually in reference to scrapbooking. She was encouraging moms to be more in the present instead of focusing too much on the past. (One caveat...she was NOT saying that scrapbooking was bad.) She pointed out how ironic it is to be scrapbooking memories of the past at the kitchen table, while pushing your children away and not spending time with them in the present. I'm not against scrapbooking at all, and I even got some computer scrapbooking software for Christmas, but I totally agree with her point. It is important to spend time with our children NOW. Maybe we can scrapbook while they're napping or on the weekend if our husbands are home to watch the kids, but this time with them is so precious, we need to take advantage of it and enjoy THEM.

It's all about the time use, i suppose! Figuring out which of our activities have the greatest long-term benefits. i mean, it's okay, even healthy, to have creative outlets. And it's okay, even healthy, for our children to learn they aren't always the focus. But you're right, time with them is precious, and they shouldn't feel like they're intruders on our time. Like all of life, it's about balance, right?

i know it's not the same with babies, but when my kids were toddler and above i used to love to share my creativity with them, and we'd make Christmas ornaments and such. So i guess what i'm thinking is that as much as we can, we should involve them in our creativity and interests. When they're big enough to participate, a scrapbooking mom could scrap them a favorites album(their favorite clothes/toys/playground activity etc,) stuff like that. Have them with you while you do dishes and chores, helping as they can (i learned that from my immensely patient daughter Shawn!) If you love to bake, they can "help" even if that just means playing with the dough-- i guess what i'm saying is, you can totally DO the stuff of life WITH them if you want! Make them a part of our life rather than an accessory TO our life. It's more work, i suppose, but quite worth it. ;-)

Julia -- Just hit the delete key and lost my comment. Have to get back to you in a few. Sleep apnea, huh?
I'd do anything to get my mind to concentrate. I listen for a while and fade out. My best sleep is in the am when I DREAM-I feel so good when I wake up then.
That must be the REM sleep. Did you go to a specialist for that? Did you get all wired up?
Anytime you want to chat, my addy is cjlenden@frontiernet.net--anytime. Time for bed-- this standard time has me all mixed up & tired.
Have a good night. Connie :)
